Composite decks are a great home addition which can provide countless hours
of enjoyment for your family and friends.
A low-maintenance deck can be built of natural or composite materials and can
last for decades if properly cared for. Deck building materials come in a wide
variety of colors and textures to accent your home. Decks are extremely flexible
and customizable to include benches, planters, or an incorporated structure
such as a gazebo, patio cover or others.
By adding a wood deck to your home, you extend the living space of your house.
Decks give you the perfect place to sit outside, relax or eat dinner. We build
decks that reflect the style of your home. No matter what type of material –
wood, composite or vinyl – you choose for your patio deck, our professional

| Naturally rot resistant wood | Cedar, Redwood, Cypress | Aesthetically pleasing, structurally strong woods. Naturally resistant to dry rot. Easier to work with than treated (or pressurized) wood, but easy to dent and mark up since they are soft. Use middle and high-grades of wood, as the lowest grades will not stand up well to warping and weather. | Wood will need to be refinished occasionally to keep it resistant to moisture, insects and sun damage. |
| Chemically treated, or pressurized, wood | Pine or Fir treated with chemical preservatives | Treated woods are less expensive than natural woods, and are artificially resistant to decay. Be sure to check on the type of chemical that is used, as poisons such as arsenic can be hazardous to human and environmental health. Look for a label that indicates the wood is kiln-dried. | Treated woods may need to be resealed annually. |
| Synthetic lumber | Plastic, Vinyl, Wastewood and Rubber (many use recycled materials) | Recycled plastic from milk jugs and grocery bags are used for plastic lumber. It comes in a variety of colors, and does not need painting. Vinyl lumber is similar to plastic and comes in white and other colors. Wood-polymer lumber is made from waste wood and recycled plastic and resembles wood in appearance. It can be stained or painted. Newly available rubber lumber is made of plastic and old tires. It is durable and stands up to water, insect and sun damage. It’s only available in three colors, and the color is not guaranteed to last. | Synthetic lumber is relatively maintenance free, other than occasional washing. |
Use wood for structural support
Real wood must be used for the structural support of your deck. Pressure-treated wood is the strongest. Synthetic materials don’t have the strength or flexibility needed for structural support. When designing your deck, keep in mind that naturally rot-resistant wood can be used in combination with treated or synthetic lumber. Treated lumber is generally cheapest and synthetic lumber the most expensive of the three types of building material.

Types of Decks
You
have a plethora of options when choosing a new deck. Often though you are restricted
by the slope of your property, any pool or ponds in your yard, and of course
the needs of your family. Here is a general list of what types of decks are
the most popular in North America, and what you should expect from them.
Above Ground Pool
Deck
These decks are almost essential if you have an
above ground pool. They make entering and exiting the pool a breeze, (a lot
like an underground pool). They also make your entire back yard safer. Your
pool will be protected from breaks and your family won't be at risk to falling
off out of the pool.
Wood Deck
Obviously the traditional deck. Wood deck are the classic
choice and are easily the most comfortable option. Using wood also gives you
unlimited design options. Plus, you can paint or stain the deck as much as you
like, thus suiting it to any season or changing exterior of your home.
Composite Deck
The composite deck could be the most exciting new
innovation in deck material. Half wood, half polymer, the composite deck has
all the strength and durability of a vinyl deck with the aesthetic appeal of
a wooden deck. It also won't splinter and it lasts a long time.
Roof Deck
Hey, not all of us live in the suburbs with a beautiful
sprawling backyard. Urban townhouses often suffer from lack of backyard space,
but vertically they have far more options. You can build a rooftop deck in most
townhouses and apartment buildings. You could also incorporate a small garden.
Just make sure that you have a secure railing to prevent any dangerous falls.
